Superbowl Superworm Sunday

Breakfast

So as you guys know, I’m still improvising my breakfasts. This morning, I was really hungry so I made a smoothie, had a cricket protein bar and made oatmeal…with waxworms.

Remember those guys? The soft, cuddly, innocent ones? So I did a little more research and found out that these aren’t as innocent as I thought. Waxworms, which are actually caterpillars, evolve into wax moths that pester beehives. And by pester I mean destroy.

These guys are harmless though. And full of protein, a great way to start the day.

Lunch

Today was no ordinary Sunday. It was Superbowl Sunday (how about that halftime show?). So, in the spirit of Superbowl Sunday, I thought it only made sense to have superworm sushi for lunch!

On a related note, if any of you like to eat sushi with crab, you should know that imitation crab is made from a red dye derived from cochineal. Cochineal is a little red beetle. Those guys are crushed up and grinded into a red dye and used for many different products. Up until 2012, Starbucks even used crushed beetles for its red-colored drinks.

Yeah, bugs are everywhere.

Dinner

Tonight, my friend Sara threw a Superbowl viewing party. A bunch of us came together and brought our own dishes. I thought I’d bring some dip with a twist.

If you look close enough, you’ll see that there are tiny little chili-lime crickets in the Queso Fundido. Caroline’s mom, Holly, sent me this recipe and it was delicious. I switched up the recipe a bit and used queso freso, a cheese my friend Isabella introduced me to. If you haven’t tried it yet, try it.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the queso fundido. So much, I felt that I should bust out the superworms and see if they could handle those.

Let’s just say this: I’m gonna need to stock up on more superworms. As I type this post, my friends are devouring my stash of superworms. They genuinely enjoy them. I cannot say what this means to me. Not only am I affirmed of my sanity, I feel like I’m really opening people’s eyes. Or mouths, I guess.

I was so nervous that I’d be alone in this. Now I have a bug posse. If anyone wants to join, let me know.
